How it works:
This page explains the technologies and assumptions used in the SmartWay
Technology Package Savings Calculator. For 1 Truck operations or companies
with multiple trucks, this easy to use calculator will quickly estimate the
average of the total fuel used and/or hours spent idling per truck in your
fleet, then show you your Net Monthly Savings at the click of a button.
General Assumptions:
Class 8 trucks are defined as vehicles with manufactures gross vehicle
weight over 33,001 pounds. We assume a fuel economy of approximately to 5.5
miles per gallon.
Direct Fired Heaters |
Auxiliary Power Units | Single Wide Tires | Trailer Aerodynamics | Automatic
Tire Inflation and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst are all outlined below.
Direct Fired Heaters:
A direct fired heater is a small, lightweight, efficient diesel fuel-fired device mounted in the cab of a truck that provides
heat for cab comfort. This technology does not include any air conditioning capabilities.
The calculation is performed by taking the number of hours a truck idles per year multiplied by the percentage of the year a truck idles for heat.
The amount of time a truck idles for heat is then multiplied by the cost of fuel and the .78 gallons per hour. Note that .78 gallons per hour is the savings based on a direct fired heater using .04 gallons per hour subtracted from a normal truck consuming .82 gallons per hour at low idle. High idle can, in some cases, consume more than a gallon per hour.
An example: 2400 hours idling multiplied by 33% (4 months) is 800 hours times $2.50 per gallon and .78 gallons saved per hour is $1560.
Auxiliary Power Units
An auxiliary power unit is a small diesel fuel-powered generator mounted outside the cab that provides the operator heat,
air-conditioning, and electrical power to run in cab appliances.
This calculation is performed by taking the number of hours a truck idles per year multiplied by the cost of
fuel and multiplied by .6 gallons per hours. Note that .6 gallons per hours is based on an auxiliary power
unit consuming .22 gallons per hour and a normal truck at low idle consuming .82 gallons per hour.
High idle can, in some cases, consume more than a gallon per hour.
An example: 2400 hours idling multiplied by both $2.50 per gallon and 0.6 gallons saved per hour is $3600.

Single Wide Tires
Single wide tires or super single tires replace traditional dual tires with one single-wide tire and aluminum
wheel. This technology can be applied to all tractor and trailer tire positions except for
the steer tires. This technology saves fuel by reducing load on the engine by reducing the weight
and rolling resistance of the tires and wheels. There is a slight aerodynamic benefit to this
technology as well. The benefits associated with this technology assume single wide tires on all applicable
axles of both the tractor and the trailer.
This calculation is performed by taking the amount of fuel a truck uses in a year and multiplying that number by
both 4% fuel efficiency and the cost of fuel. In the event that someone would also want to purchase an aerodynamics
package, the combined efficiency would lead to an 8% fuel economy benefit.
An example using single wide tires: 18,000 gallons per year consumed driving multiplied by both $2.50 per gallon and 4% is $1800.

Trailer Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics reduce drag which in turn reduce engine load. Fairings can be added to the
front, underside, and rear of the trailer to reduce drag. Benefits
associated with trailer aerodynamics assume the tractor pulling the trailer also has an
aerodynamic package installed on it.
This calculation is performed by taking the amount of fuel a truck uses in a year and multiplying that number by both
5% fuel efficiency and the cost of fuel.
In the event that someone would also want to purchase a complete set of single wide tires, the combined
efficiency would lead to an 8% fuel economy benefit.
An example with just trailer aerodynamics: 18,000 gallons per year consumed driving multiplied by both
$2.50 per gallon and 5% is $2250.

Automatic Tire Inflation
Under inflated tires can cause significant losses in fuel efficiency,
plus dangerous blow outs. Automatic tire inflation systems can ensure the
safety of drivers while lowering fuel costs.
This calculation is performed by taking amount a fuel a truck uses in a year and multiplying that number by both
0.6% fuel efficiency and the cost of fuel.
An example: 18,000 gallons per year consumed driving multiplied by both $2.50 per gallon and .06% is $270.

Diesel Oxidation Catalyst
A diesel oxidation catalyst is a fuel efficiency neutral device added to the tractor’s exhaust system to reduce
the emissions of particulate matter and other pollutants.
There is no calculation for this technology. Since it is a fuel neutral device, it neither consumes nor saves fuel.

Loans are calculated by multiplying the cost of the technology package by the payment function
The payment function is:
The interest rate divided by 12 months to get the periodic interest rate.
The periodic interest rate is then placed into the payment function.
The payment function is calculated as the total cost of all the selected
technologies multiplied by the quotient of periodic interest rate multiplied
by 1 plus the periodic interest rate to the combined power of twelve times
the number of years that loan is for (the number of loan periods); then
divided by the periodic interest rate multiplied by 1 plus the periodic
interest rate to the combined power of twelve times the number of years that
loan is for and then subtracted by one.
The those interested in viewing the
mathematical explanation of the Loan Calculator:
If the Cost of the technology product was $1000
Periodic interest rate = 0.0041667% (5% (.05) divided by 12)
Loan periods = 48 (12 months multiplied by 4 years)
The equation will look like this:
$1000 * (0.0041667 * ((1+0.0041667) to the power of 48)/(((1+0.0041667) to the power of 48) -1));
The monthly loan payments for the above $1000 loan would be: $23.03
